Ivan Mangold likes to talk about the early days when Turner Roofing still used wood-fired kettles on their tar and gravel built-up roofs in the San Antonio area during the twenties and thirties. He says, “Back then the wood-fired kettle trucks would travel down Houston Avenue in San Antonio, and the street was paved with wooden blocks and the live coals from the kettle would fall onto the street — they had to carry drums of water to extinguish the fire or the street would catch fire!” Ivan went to work for Turner when he was a teenager and later, when he returned home from serving in the Army during World War II, he purchased the company from its founders, Arch and William Turner.
Turner Roofing started as a supplier of all types of roofing materials including gravel, sand, tar and shingles. When William Turner got out of the Army following World War I and joined the firm he started the Sheet Metal and Roofing division.
